In the next few weeks, nine homeless veterans will be moving into apartments of their own, thanks to HUD/VASH (Housing and Urban Development/Veterans Affairs Supported Housing), one of the local VA Homeless Programs. HUD provides housing vouchers to help with rent; the VA identifies eligible veterans, assigns the vouchers and provides case management, medical/mental health/substance abuse treatment, and outreach and referral services. However, the program does not have funding to provide for anything beyond the empty apartments. Many of these veterans have no money and no income when they enter the programs. Donations of furniture and household items are urgently needed, such as couches, chairs, tables, bookcases, dressers, televisions, kitchen items, bedding, towels, etc. Cash donations are also helpful. Receipts for tax purposes are available. If you have items to donate, or questions, please call VA Homeless Programs volunteers, Bunny, 471-8527, or Judith, 685-1965.
New mattress sets are also needed; until these veterans get mattresses, they sleep on the floor. Mattress Firm is supporting the VA Homeless Programs. Adam Bader, franchise co-owner, is generously offering mattress sets (mattress, box springs and metal frame) at special discounted prices for veterans in the programs. A full/double-size set is $176 (plus tax). The VA Homeless Programs can also provide a charitable donation receipt for tax purposes for your mattress purchase when you provide proof of purchase. If you would like to purchase a mattress set for a homeless veteran, call Adam at 573-2805 or visit any Mattress Firm location (703 N. Academy , 5408 N. Academy, 7784 N. Academy, or 1670 E. Cheyenne Mountain).
These veterans served their country and you. Please show them that they are not forgotten and help them now.
