Of the 56.7 million people with disabilities in the United States, 50% are deaf or hard of hearing. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires public and private businesses, non-profit organizations and government entities to communicate as effectively with people with disabilities as they do with all others.
In the same way that you provide accessible parking for people with disabilities, you should be able to serve, help and communicate with your customers who are deaf or hard of hearing by learning basic American Sign Language, the third most frequently used language in the U.S.
Learn how to communicate with your customers who are deaf or hard of hearing with basic sign language instruction.
I offer basic sign language and deaf culture training for businesses and organizations to help them communicate effectively with all their customers, including those who are deaf and hard of hearing. Training is offered as a small group seven-week course at our Colorado Springs office and as a four-hour intensive workshop for large groups at locations of their choice.
I have been teaching sign language for more than 30 years and previously served on the Montana Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (MRID) Board of Directors and was a Montana Association of the Deaf (MAD) member. Unlike other sign language training that solely teaches sign language vocabulary, we provide participants with additional information on industry-related disability topics and unique communication methods so they have the knowledge and skills to continue learning sign language independently.
Our sign language training participants will:
• Learn how to produce and recognize the hand shapes of the Manual Alphabet
• Acquire knowledge of the rules of ASL
• Learn how to produce and recognize 24 ASL phrases
• Learn how to produce and recognize signed numbers
• Gain awareness of ASL resources and how to use a sign language interpreter
• Become familiar with ADA effective communication requirements
The small group seven-week ASL course (2 hours/session) is available for $125 per person. The four-hour intensive ASL workshop for large groups is offered for $500 per course. Materials are provided electronically. Requestor provides hard copies.
