Mothers’ Milk Bank (MMB), a Colorado-based program benefitting women and babies nationwide, screened, pasteurized and dispensed nearly 800,000 ounces of donated human milk to hospital neo-natal intensive care units and babies in need in 2016. This is nearly 150,000 more ounces more than MMB, North America’s largest nonprofit milk bank, dispensed in the previous year.

Referred to as  “liquid gold,” human milk provides newborns and babies with essential immune properties, growth factors, hormones, enzymes and many other important properties that they can not get from formula.

“Human milk is crucial for a baby’s ability to grow and thrive,” said Laraine-Lockhart Borman, director of outreach at MMB. “Human milk saves babies facing critical medical conditions and also provides immunity to long-term health issues such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis and asthma. “

In December 2016, The American Academy of Pediatrics issued its first policy statement on donor human milk which outlined several guidelines regarding usage and safety and advised that human milk should not be purchased over the internet or shared between friends but rather obtained from milk banks (such as MMB and other nonprofit banks) that adhere to the strict processing and pasteurization guidelines of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) or other established commercial milk banks.

“Donated human milk is very precious. As stewards of this life-saving, personal gift, it is our responsibility to treat it with the utmost care to ensure that the NICUs and babies we serve are receiving the safest product available,” said Borman.

More than 9,000,000 ounces of milk are needed annually to meet the needs of preterm infants across the United States. MMB processes nearly 25,000 ounces of milk every week, serving babies in more than 120 hospitals across 24 states.   MMB welcomes donor milk from women throughout Colorado and most of the United States.

Women interested in donating milk may fill out the donor screening form on MMB’s website at or call 303.869.1888.
