Faith and Hard Work Led SMHS Cross Country Team to Success

St. Mary’s High School’s cross country team enjoyed a stellar year. For the first time in five years, the men qualified for the state championships as a team. And on the women’s team, Elena Slavoski became the school’s first cross country athlete to place first at regionals.

Head Coach Deb Hellman and Assistant Coach Mike Kloenne attribute the success to what they say is an incredible team chemistry that developed over the course of the season. That chemistry resulted from both shared…

This Halloween, after all of your ghosts and goblins have tricked for their last treat, compost your jack-o-lanterns instead of throwing them out in the garbage. Prepare your car for safe Winter Driving!

Right now we’re enjoying the beautiful temperatures of autumn weather, but we all know that winter will likely be here before we know it. Now is the time to get your car ready for winter driving!

#1: Check the Stuff That Keeps Your Car Running

Check your battery, antifreeze level, brakes, and tires.  Don’t be caught on the side of the road, if your battery goes out or your car’s radiator or block crack due to lack of antifreeze.  Good tires and brakes are essential for…

SMHS Students Hear about Chastity from Former Top Model Contestant

Christian teens hear the message of chastity often and from multiple sources—their parents, churches, and schools. So when Leah Darrow, an international Catholic speaker who was once a contestant on America’s Next Top Model, came to St. Mary’s High School to speak on chastity, the message wasn’t new.

But some of the students said what was new was how the message was delivered. Darrow, who is in her early 30s, shared her story of wrong choices finally made right by a return to…

Kraus Shares About U.S. Educational System During Trip to China

A few months ago John Kraus, president of St. Mary’s High School, probably wouldn’t have thought he’d be spending 10-days in China at the end of September. But when China Project Hope asked him to speak in China about education in the United States, Kraus jumped at the chance.

This year six students from China are attending St. Mary’s through China Project Hope. The Chinese students are part of an international student program that Kraus would like to see grow.

Ambassadors Represent St. Mary's in a Variety of Ways

The first 20 years or so of life are filled with transitions, some of which are harder than others. But the Ambassador program at St. Mary’s High School helps with those transitions even once high school is done.

Each year about 80 St. Mary’s students, including students in their freshman through senior years, are named SMHS Ambassadors. Once assigned that title, they are put to work representing the school in a variety of ways. Robyn Cross, director of admissions at St.…

Operation Christmas Child, After the Fire

Oh, the summer of 2012....one we'd like to "put in the history books" and put behind us!  So many of us were evacuated and went through the trauma of watching the fire, and so many lost everything material.

For some of us, July was spent "sifting"....working with Samaritan's Purse, the international Christian relief organization.  It was cathartic, to just be able to do "something" amidst all the tragedy, helping homeowners sift through the rubble and find some precious items.  All…
