Nemo's Coffee Shop Review: A+

A friend of mine wanted to get together to discuss our latest writing projects, and suggesed Nemo's Coffee Shop as our venue. I wasn't familiar with the shop, but readily agreed since I'm always on the lookout for a new gathering place to write, have coffee, and meet with friends.

With a name like "Nemo's," I expected to see cartoon Dori and Nemo fish swimming on the walls. Not so, but there was a whimsical turtle stenciled on the glass. Walking through the door, a well-stocked… Continue

Radiant Church Grand Re-Opening a Success

Radiant Church unveiled its "new version" during its Radiant 2.0 Grand Re-Opening on Sept. 14, 2008, and invited the entire community to attend.

Churchgoers were given invitation cards to pass out, postcards were mailed, radio ads were announced, banners were hung, and the event was posted on YourHub to invite the community to see the results of this church's Extreme Makeover over the past nine months--on the inside AND out, physically and spiritually! Not only was the event a… Continue

Rifle, CO: An Extended Stay

Rifle, Colorado, approximately a four-hour drive from Colorado Springs (west on I-70 past Glenwood Springs), is home to Rifle Gap State Park, just north of town. The park has a 350-acre reservoir for fishing and boating, a beach area for swimming, and an 89-site campground.

Camping can be as short as overnight or as long as up to two weeks. Drive-in and walk-in tent sites are available, as well as sites for RV's and trailers (some of the sites are large enough to accommodate a camper… Continue

The Ten Commandments of Camping

Recently while camping at Rifle Gap State Park, I saw how the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1-17 can apply to camping rules, so I have come up with the following Ten Commandments of Camping:

Biblical #1 & 2: I am the LORD your God...you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a… Continue

Blessings in the Thorns

Do you complain that a rose has thorns? Or do you rejoice that the thorns have roses? Is the glass half empty or half full? Are you like the comic strip character Hagar the Horrible, who sees the half glass of beer, grabs and drinks it, and asks, "Why argue?"

Two and a half years ago, my husband Greg landed a job with an asphalt company here in Colorado Springs. When winter approached, most of the workers were laid off. "You can't pave in the snow, cold, rain, etc.," he was told. He… Continue

Interesting Nature Discoveries

While living in a tent for the past 4 weeks, I have tuned in to the surroundings and made a few observations:

Magpies have a beautiful "warbling" song in addition to the annoying screech they make.

Magpies will steal your dog's food if left unattended.

Raccoons are good at getting under tarps and ripping through backpacks to get to that same dog food.

The Big Dipper is positioned to "pour" its contents onto the horizon after nightfall. In the wee… Continue

ABC Poem: Rifle, CO

"Homesick"

Aspens dress themselves in gold,

Black-eyed Susans lose their petals.

Coyotes howl in the dark.

Days grow shorter,

Evergreens drop their pinecones.

Frost forms on the windshield,

Grass withers.

Halloween is fast approaching.

Ice melts in the cooler:

Just a few reminders that

KOA is closing down.

Lizards playing chase entertain me,

Magpies screeching is

Noise I can do without.

Orion's Belt hides behind… Continue

Tent Camping Isn't For Everyone

My husband Greg and I thoroughly enjoy camping, and there are many great places throughout Colorado where we may indulge our favorite pasttime. However, the more I camp, the more I realize that camping is not for everyone.

We camp in a tent, which I consider "roughing it." Being in an RV, 5th wheel, or other type of camper allows too many luxuries because you have electricity, heat, running water, a flushing toilet, and sturdy shelter. However, we do like to have at least a few… Continue

Finding the Cross

An unexpected package arrived for me in the mail in December 2006. The writing was my mother's, but she had sworn off giving Christmas and birthday presents to her kids now that she was retired. Perhaps she changed her mind this year?

Inside was a blue velvet box, along with a note from Mom: "Your father was feeling a little froggy this year, so he decided to send a little something to the mothers of all his grandchildren." My hands trembled as I removed the stunning diamond and gold… Continue
