A Tribute to My Dad

Five days after my wedding on 7/7/07, I received a call from my sister in Maryland that my father, Bob Merchant, only had 1-2 weeks to live, possibly 1-2 months. He had been diagnosed with recurrent melanoma approximately 2 weeks before, and we were hopeful that it was treatable with chemotherapy or radiation. Unfortunately, when additional tests came back, the doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to his brain, organs, and bones, and was not treatable.

My Dad took the news… Continue

Got Swing? Hope & Home's Swingset Build

I LOVE to volunteer! I have had the privilege and honor of being able to volunteer for many fantastic organizations. I love to help people and use my skills to bless others. I started volunteering in the mid-90's, when I helped prepare and serve meals at a soup kitchen in Washington D.C. through Associated Catholic Charities, and did roadside trash cleanup as part of the Telephone Pioneers when I worked for the phone company in Beltsville, Md.

Traffic Law Breakers Must've Failed Drivers Test

I am totally shocked by the number of motorists who blatantly break traffic laws in this city! And I'm not even talking about the thousands of people who fail to use turn signals, roll through stop signs or drive 60-plus in a 45 mph work zone! Running Red Lights: Just the other night, I was headed north on Circle Avenue. I took the right-hand exit just past Kohl's to turn left onto Hancock… Continue

The Popsicle Man

We live in a not-so-affluent part of Colorado Springs, where it's painfully evident that many of the children in our neighborhood don't have many good role models in their lives. They're outside all day long and late into the night. This might be considered good since they're not sitting in front of a computer or TV all day and instead are getting some fresh air and exercise. Or, sadly enough, it may be because their parent(s) doesn't want them in the house. They while away the hours picking… Continue

Point Lookout, MD Holds Special Memories

On July 7, 2007 (seven being the biblical symbol of spiritual perfection, or completeness), my husband and I had our "church wedding." We had gotten married at the Courthouse last November, but this was our "formal, public wedding," kind of like a baptism is your proclamation to the world that you've accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, this was our proclamation of spiritual perfection in God before friends and family--that we were "complete." It was a beautiful wedding, but… Continue
