A Sense of Community

With all of the press about the teen from Mitchell high School who was hit by a car and subsequently died from his injuries, it was publicized that at a basketball game between Doherty and Palmer a fund raiser (t-shirts were printed and being sold) was going on, to help the family of the teen. At the February Membership meeting of the CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association, they got into the act of buying t-shirts, also. This teen could have been from ANY of the area high schools! As alumni, we all…See More

Hologram Technology is Here at Palmer

At the Board of Directors meeting of the CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association in July, we were given a monetary request, from Sean Wybrant. Sean teaches Digital Media Studies at Palmer. In plain English - he teaches computer geeks, or, wanna be computer geeks. His request was for funds so that his department could purchase another pair of these "HoloLens" glasses (which really is a computer), from Microsoft. The glasses work with a computer program, which by the way; Palmer is one of only two high…See More

WWJD (What would Jesus do?). We all have seen those initials, right? Well, how about these initials, WWYD (What would you do?) Here's the scenario:“What if?” you lived in a Colorado Springs apartment complex. This location is for those 55 and over, living independently. Palmer Alumni Hall of Fame Gets 3 New Members

1875 - 2015. That equates to 140 years. That is how long the school once known as the Colorado Springs High School, has been around. That, was later renamed the William J. Palmer High School, in 1959. Named of course, after the founder of Colorado Springs. It, like other schools across the nation has been nationally…See More

Palmer Alumni Visits Queen Palmer

In their annual “I Love to Read” program, the CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association along with more than a dozen members of the Palmer High School Student Council, came to Queen Palmer Elementary School to read and give. As some of you may know the local history: General William Palmer was the founder of our fine city and the principal builder of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. The name of his wife, was Mary Lincoln Mellen. "Queen" was a nickname given to her by her father. Glen Eyrie was their…See More

Palmer Alumni and the Palmer Student Council

It is almost like breaking in your replacements or at least, your soon to be colleagues. The "StuCo" or student council at Palmer High School, has been a great asset to the school as well as to those who are alumni of Palmer. They work closely with the incoming freshmen in the Link Crew program, serving as guides and mentors to those brand new to Palmer. They go to City Hall to accept the Proclamation of their Homecoming Week from a City Council member. Later on in the school year, they fill…See More

Handicap Parking FINE INCREASES...

I have touched on this subject before I thought, but I cannot find any thing. ANYWAYS, I have breaking news to let out! But first, let's back up a bit:From my side of the fence (handicapped and holder of placard/plates), I see people parking illegally in these spots all over town. Many times I hear, "Oh, I'm just going in for a minute," or "yeah, so?" Well, according to the law, pulling in and stopping in one of these spaces is considered parking and you just earned yourself a $100 fine. From…See More

Tuskegee Airman Gets the Pomp and Circumstance

Mr. Franklin Macon, a member of the Colorado Springs High School Class of 1942, had finished his senior year of high school. He just didn't get the chance to go across the stage (due to car trouble) and enjoy the pageantry that went with graduating. That is, until he “joined” the Graduating Class of 2014 at Palmer High School (CSHS was re-named to Palmer in 1960) and got his chance to go through the ceremony on stage. At last year's Veterans Day celebration at Palmer, Franklin was there and I…See More

Indian Mascots vs Common Sense...

I have been reading various articles/stories in the last month or 2 that really get my goat...I have seen where in some places, in order for a school to have/keep a mascot depicting an Indian in some way or another, they have to have a letter from an Indian tribe give their 'blessing' as it were, to use it...Sad to say, I did not know our mascot's history when I was going to Palmer in the early/mid 70's. I just knew that it was a cool looking Indian that had a big nose - that's all. No jokes,…See More

Green Beret Letter Takes Stand

I don't write much in my blog, but I viewed this and came away with a feeling of "this has to be shared." I have a few thoughts at the end:The Green Berets, the US Army Special Forces, have a new open letter on the Second Amendment. Over 1100 have signed it so far. In the US Army, it is no secret that the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), United States Code (USC titles 10, 2, and 18), Department of Defense (DOD) directives, and strict Military Guidelines limit, if not forbid, military…See More

Teddy on Being an American...

Posted on February 7, 2012 at 7:10am 0 Comments

In a speech given in 1916, former President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt spoke of how he believed that “immigrants taking up residence in the U. S. should assimilate into American society as quickly as possible, learn the English language, eschew (get rid of) hyphenated national identities (e.g. “Italian-American”) and declare their primary allegiance to the United States of America”. Later on in 1917 he said, “We must have in this country but one flag and for the…
