April 26, 9:00 AM - Noon -- DISTRICT 12 COMMUNICATION CONTEST FOR THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING will take place at Canon Preschool, 1201 W. Cheyenne Road, COS, hosted by the Academy Optimist Club. The CCDHH provides an opportunity for young people who are deaf or hard of hearing to communicate in a public forum while developing valuable skills and confidence. The students write and present a 4-5 minute speech on this year's topics "Why My Voice Matters" or "Why My Opinion Matters." The hard-of-hearing contestants in this contest will do their speeches orally vs by sign language (ASA) since the signed contest occurred February 27th. The top three contestants from both the deaf and the hard of hearing contests will be invited to the CO/WY district convention at the Marriott Hotel in Golden, CO on Saturday May 11, 2013. Here the winners will compete for two scholarships of $2,500. One of the scholarships goes to the best speech given by a contestant who signs the speech, while the second scholarship goes to the top contestant doing the speech orally. The Academy Optimist Club is one of many Optimist Clubs throughout Colorado and worldwide. Optimist programs and service projects include Bringing Up Grades (BUG), Liberty Kids, Brain Bowl Contests, Essay Contests, Santa Train on the Cog Railway, as well as sponsorship of junior service clubs at all school levels. To learn more, visit the local club's website at www.academyoptimist.org, or attend a meeting on Tuesdays 7:15 AM at Mimi's Cafe, 7133 N Academy Blvd, Colorado Springs, or you may call 719-593-2880.
