The choir members at Palmer High School must have seen those movies too, because in May of 2018 that is exactly where they have been invited to sing!
“The 19 Chamber Singers were surprised and proud to be invited to sing at Carnegie Hall, They (and their parents) immediately began planning and preparing for the trip,” said their teacher Jeff Peckham.
How many people can say that they've been to Carnegie Hall much less, ever been on stage to perform?
Peckham, the Choir director holds the official titles of Vocal Music Director, Performing Arts Department Chair and the Colorado All-State Jazz Choir Chair.
He is a Palmer alumnus himself and has been teaching for 30 years. The last eight of those years at his Alma Mater. During that time, his choirs have captured first, gold, excellent or outstanding marks in various competitions; be they local or otherwise. They were invited to Disney's Performing Arts competition and to New Orleans to compete, also. Each time, they made themselves, their parents, their teacher, their school and their hometown, proud.
Being award-winners is how they got invited to this upcoming prestigious event.
This trip will not be a competition, but a “joining” of other choirs under the direction of Dr. Frank F. Eychaner, Associate Professor. Director of Choral Studies and Vocal Activities, at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. On the UTPB Website about Dr. Eychaner: “He taught for eight years at Colorado Christian University, before going to his present job.
He served the Colorado choral community as the President-Elect of the College and University Council of the Colorado Music Educators Association and the Membership chair of the Colorado chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, a position he has held since 2006.”
There will be seven and possibly more choirs from Washington, Utah, Colorado and Texas and this will be Dr. Eychaner's first time directing, at the Hall. The choirs will have three days of rehearsals prior to performing, Morten Lauridsen’s “Lux Aeterna.”
This event is part of the 35th season of concerts put together by MidAmerican Productions, In the audience will be some 3,000-3,400 people coming to hear these voices unite.
The choir is working diligently on raising money for the trip, in many ways. “We submitted a funding request to our CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association and they were (as always) eager to help. Although there are several months before the trip, the choir is accepting any and all financial help to get to New York.
